Vietnamese Royal Costumes Presentation

Gain insight into the aesthetics and meaning behind imperial and noble Vietnamese dresses. The presentation will be conducted in both Vietnamese and English.

Viet Nam is a country with a rich cultural heritage and a long-standing history. Over the course of millennia, the Vietnamese people have created a wide range of traditional garments — not merely for covering the body, but as expressions of identity, virtue, and social standing.

Many of these traditional garments have become valuable cultural legacies, bearing the imprint of distinct historical periods — among them, the imperial Nguyễn dynasty of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional Vietnamese clothing comes in many forms and is often named based on its structure or collar design — such as the round-collared robe, the cross-collared robe, the parallel-paneled gown, or the five-paneled dress.

In addition to their visual elegance, royal costumes under the Nguyễn dynasty followed very strict regulations. These rules reflected the highly organized social structure and ceremonial life of the imperial court.

The design, color, and decorative patterns of each outfit were carefully determined based on the wearer’s rank and the type of occasion.
